Chapter 6

Predawn light spilled over Stevie’s sleeping form as Dagen left their shared bedroom, determined to find answers. Although Stevie revealed much, there were still mysteries surrounding her and his son.

He checked on Matthew before continuing to the lower level. The house remained quiet as he strode through the familiar hallways. Most of the rooms were empty, but his parents shared this house with him. Pictures hung on the walls of the deceased family, most lost during the great purge in Ireland. It was sad so many died for fear…fear they were the monsters in nightmares.

And now, his mate faced the same challenge, but she learned it from her father. Why would he make her believe a lie? And why create a serum to give to a child who acted in defense? And her father was a warlock? He only knew of Druids. Warlocks disappeared after the war.

Matthew wouldn’t experience what his mother did. His species wasn’t monstrous. Stevie wasn’t the horrible nightmare her father had led her to believe. She was The Luna Alpha, a Luna without a mate forced into a prison. The situation would be enough to make any werewolf lose their mind.

Dagen turned the corner only to see his old friend, Jax Duvan, already awaiting his arrival. “So, you’ve heard?”

Jax nodded. “I’m an old man who adores gossip.”

A chuckle rumbled from Dagen. “I doubt you came all this way for gossip.”

Jax gestured to the library and then to the ceiling. “She’s the one. The message came from the moon itself. I assume you have questions?”

Dagen paused before his old friend, perusing his theatrical robe and the symbols branded on his weathered face. “I didn’t know the moon spoke. Perhaps I should go outside and talk to it instead?”

Jax laughed. “There’s many things you don’t know.”

Dagen shook his head at his friend’s cryptic words. Unsettled and puzzled, he paced the room, occasionally touching the covers of old books, lost in his thoughts. He didn’t bother to look when Jax sat behind one of the wooden tables.

“She’s part Druid. Her mother is a direct descendant of the Baduri or Bandori. They were mostly peaceful healers, but they defended in times of unrest.”

“The Baduri?”

“The Baduri were female Druids, or Druidesses, and warriors. They healed and worshiped the Goddess Danu, The Great Mother.”

“So magic is involved? It would explain the glow and color of her eyes.”

“Danu is all about unity, motherhood, peace, bountiful harvests, fertility, and such, but she also controlled the winds and the rivers. History says she’s a magical being, but no one knows for sure, and the Romans destroyed most of the records. Danu is a fallen daughter of the ancient Celtic Gods.”

“Stevie said she was told our race was extinct.”

“This is where things get murky,” Jax offered. “Her mother took a human as a mate. That mate attempted to poison Brighid, Bianca’s twin sister. In those times, it was frowned upon and grounds for banishment or death.”

“Banished from Ireland?”

Jax frowned and opened an old, leather-bound book on the table.
